As I covered in a recent post about my shoot for the Asheville Scene, we had a circus theme – a-la-Asheville style – that we were trying to adhere to with the individual shots of the Asheville Scene staff in addition to the group shot. With the help of stylist Chris Bryant, who not only gathered props from all over Asheville (including the incredibly heavy vintage stove you see in the shot with Katy) but painted our circus tent as well, we scheduled the shoot so that we were able to get solo shots as well. This sounds like an obvious thing, but scheduling hair, makeup and crew for a group shot and the solo shots was a scheduling feat!

We wanted to have a little hint of what each person contributes to the Scene, and here are a few samples to show you.

I created a series of images of the estate that you can find in my studio as well as in gift shops at the estate, but was I was pleasantly surprised to see this quarter’s issue of Biltmore Style, where they opened it with a feature on their licensed artists! Thank you, Biltmore.

If I had to pick a favorite photographic subject, it would be musicians. They typically are open to all ideas, think outside the box, and are used to being in front of a camera. The most recent session I had was with Abigail Washburn and Bela Flek, as we were all at Rancho La Puerta together, where they perform and I teach photography classes. What a treat it was to listen to these incredibly talented, banjo playing musicians perform together in a small venue! Since both Abigail and Bela have strong solo careers, they didn’t have photos of themselves together as a duo musical act, and this is where I came in. I scouted out the location a day ahead to find several options that we could shoot in that brief window of time before the sun set, to get the “magic light”. With such easy going and generous people (not to mention photogenic), it was not hard to get some nice images.

Acoustic Syndicate, back in action after several year’s break, still have a loyal following in the region for their folk rock music. I’ve done a few photo sessions with them lately for their upcoming record as well as their soon to be finished new website. Here is a sneak peek from one of the sessions. One of the images will be featured on the cover of their first CD in 8 years which should be released this fall.

When jazz pianist Vijay Iyer was in Chapel Hill with his trio, I had about 10 minutes on a winter day (think bare trees, lack of color) to get a shot of them. Vijay is one of the most critically acclaimed artists in jazz right now, with a tour schedule that doesn’t often leave him 10 minutes for anything, so I was glad to have the opportunity. If you don’t know his music, you should check it out. Howard Reich (of the Chicago Tribune) wrote “By now, there can be no doubt that pianist-composer Iyer stands among the most daringly original jazz artists of [his] generation”. The American-born son of Indian immigrants and a 2011 Grammy nominee, VIJAY IYER (pronounced “VID-jay EYE-yer”) was described by The Village Voice as “the most commanding pianist and composer to emerge in recent years,” by The New Yorker as one of “today’s most important pianists… extravagantly gifted,” by Pitchfork as “one of the most interesting and vital young pianists in jazz today,” and by the L.A. Weekly as “a boundless and deeply important young star.”

We managed to do a shoot in front of Memorial Hall on the campus of UNC just before their performance, and we were lucky to be able to catch that bit of color that comes from the setting sun. Here are a few of the images from that shoot. One of them was used in their CD “Historicity” and I’ve seen them come up in publications all around the world since then. Sometimes these magazines even remember to include my photo credit!

When I was working on a stop motion video for the Crash Test Dummies, I needed to photograph Brad Roberts, who basically, is, the Crash Test Dummies. The day I arrived at Brad’s apartment in Soho, NYC was in the middle of a brutal heat wave, and it was over 100 degrees then. Needless to say we had to keep “dabbing the talent” as a result, and I enthusiastically shot Brad until he said “I’m about to expire”…

Brad had already given me plenty of his time and energy, and you can see the final results in the video here. Below are some still images from that video that I like all on their own.

One of my favorite businesses near my studio in downtown Asheville is the Battery Park Book Exchange. Not only does it have used books floor to ceiling of all genres that you can peruse, it also has a wine bar with an extensive wine menu and a cappuccino bar. Additionally, they allow four footed humans to accompany their owners on a comfortable sofa or chair as they read or socialize – the servers even bring the dogs water and a treat. To celebrate this fact I created a short stop motion video to advertise the fact that they are so dog friendly and to let people know that they sell wine to go at a big discount. I hope you enjoy watching my video (please share it if you do!).

Just before the holidays I had a memorable photo shoot for the Asheville Citizen Times upcoming Marathon. My job was to capture the feel of the marathon as it goes through downtown Asheville, specifically by the Lexington Avenue bridge, aka art mural. If you’ve spent much time in downtown Asheville during the warmer months, you’ll surely have seen the “Silver Drummer Girl” who performs on the streets downtown, mesmerizing many with her ability to stand motionless until someone she beats her drum when someone leaves her a tip. We wanted to have a shot that showed her handing out water to the runners on the marathon as they go by the Lexingon bridge and have a blur of runners go past her.

Did I mention that it needed to look like a warm morning in early September, and that it was 25 degrees in December with up to 45 mph wind gusts? This was a challenge for all involved – the volunteer runners, the client, the assistant holding down the lights, the Silver Lady, and of course yours truly. So, we would have everyone wait in their cars near the shooting location and then I would shout “Okay, out of your cars! Drop your coats. Run! Back in your cars!” and everyone would dash to the relative warmth away from the winds as they waited for the next call to shoot again. My fingers were so numb despite the gloves I wore that I tried to use my knuckles to operate my laptop. Here is the final image from that shoot that is up on billboards around town now (see below!).

One of the most enjoyable shoots ever was one I did recently for the Asheville Scene, a weekend publication of the Asheville Citizen Times. The purpose was to introduce their relatively new publication’s staff to the community, as it’s a staff they are mighty proud of. Working with stylist Chris Bryant and our client from the ACT, we settled on a great location in downtown Asheville that offered plenty of natural light, character and props. Next we assembled a great team of makeup artists from Makeup, hair stylist Colleen Webster, and clothing from Hip Replacements to create glamorous looks with an Asheville quirkiness that fit with our circus theme. Chris created the circus tent (complete with flooded basement patina that was offered during the heavy rains that week) and gathered props from all over town with his genius for selecting just the right thing. We woke up to icy roads and school closings, yet all 14 people showed up on time and with great attitudes. As Chris said “It was more of a party than a job.” I couldn’t agree more.

Not to a child of my own – I had more of a midwife position with this one.

Together with stylist Chris Bryant, I have been working for the past two weeks doggedly to finish A LOT of shots of food for babies through 3 year olds for Becky Cannon’s upcoming mega book “grow healthy. grow happy: The Guide to Natural Baby Care”. While composing and shooting the photos, I’ve learned a lot about the ways you can prepare healthy, appetizing food for babies that doesn’t come from a jar, and that tastes good too…almost makes me wish I was going to have a baby to try these dishes out on (but not quite). We were able to set up a make shift studio in Becky’s dining room that provided plenty of nice light for most of the shots, trying as always to make the food “real” vs. painting all kinds of icky “enhancers” on it. We shot long and hard days, culminating in the last day’s schedule that had six 10-12 month old babies showing up 30 minutes apart for back to back portraits in the summer garden (created in the fall garden on an October day). The crew scattered picked flowers all around and I bet you can’t tell it wasn’t shot on a summer day. It’s been a while since I’ve photographed babies so it was fun to use all those tricks I’d accumulated over the years that I used to photograph children a lot. We were amazingly lucky to have such happy little cutie pies show up, so Becky will have a plethora of shots to choose from.

Below is a combination of food shots from the book, setup shots and the baby shots.

Here is our set that we used for most of the food shots – a dining room table propped up on two other tables to get the right height.

After many months of running across the street to the Grove Arcade to shoot this or that, and countless edits, I’m happy to report that I’ve finished (as much as I’m ever finished with these videos) my newest stop motion video featuring the Grove Arcade. The goal was to show that it is a happening place with lots of character (and local characters hanging out there) and diverse stores, wine bars and restaurants – something for everyone. The music is by one of my very favorite bands, local musicians Ol Hoopty with a version of “Step Back Baby”, which was a perfect match for the upbeat mood I was after. I hope you enjoy watching this two minute video – please share it with your friends. If it inspires you to get a makeover at Makeup, browse the used books while sipping a latte at the Battery Park Book Exchange, sip wine on tap at Sante, or grab a burger at Burger works, then something is working…

Thursday October 4th is the opening of Chris McMillan’s new furnishings store in Biltmore Village – Dwellings Inspired Furnishings. Many of you remember the former Dwellings store in the same area, so you know what a shopping treat Chris provides, but this store takes creative furnishings to a whole new level. Not only do we get to see beautiful furniture imported from other parts of the world, we get to see the work of other artists as well that Chris invited to share his space. My friend and long time artist/collaborator, Billy Sproul, asked if I would like to help him cover the walls of his 1000 square foot “Slab Fab Studio” space with art work that we could work on together – my photos, his frames, collaborative aesthetic.

It was interesting to go through years of never printed images with “What would work with Billy’s wacky sensibilities?” in my mind. I wanted to show images totally different from the Asheville colorful images I’ve become known for, and these definitely fit that description. Here are samples – I hope you will get to Dwellings to take a look not only at our work, but because you’ll find all kinds of things for that wish list, I’m sure.

Many people have asked me where they can buy the Asheville series images that used to be sold at Mobilia before they were bought out by Four Corners a couple of years ago, so I decided to use my studio, for a while at least, as a “store” for these images. I’ve got all sizes and prices available, and as always all images are available as custom orders. I realized that as fun as it was to share the work of other artists has been by letting them display their work in my studio, it was more work than I had bargained before on top of my own business. So, for now my studio has become my own retail outlet and I will be hanging that “open” sign up whenever I’m available, and of course I’m always open by appointment as well. If you are in Asheville and would like a souvenir, please come by.

The new Asheville Scene mentioned Working Girls Studio & Gallery in their premiere issue – take a look and stop by next time you’re in downtown Asheville!

It’s been a while since I actually worked on Ashley English’s “A Year of Pies” (being published by Lark Books, available soon), but when I saw a pre-order ad for the book today, it brought back all the mouth watering memories of shooting that beautiful book. Of all the books I’ve shot for Lark, I would have to say that this is my favorite. Not only was it great to be working with the Homemade Living team again, but we added the talented Travis Medford as designer to make the team that much stronger. Team being author Ashley English, editor Nicole McConville and stylist, photo/food stylist extraordinaire, Chris Bryant and designer Travis Medford. We shot the entire book over an 8 day period in Chris’s wonderful cottage in W. Asheville with his bounty of props that were just right, using mostly available light and reflectors – my favorite way to work. Of course we always lugged all the lighting equipment in the house, but many days we barely used them, opting instead to chase the sun around various windows so that it looked like these were prepared in a “real” home (they were).

On top of interesting photography, we were treated at the end of each shoot day with slices of Ashley’s delicious pies to take home to our grateful families (when they lasted the car ride home). The recipes were so yummy that I’ve already pre-ordered 3 copies, as this is one cookbook that I must have, and am very proud of.

Here are a few shots from the book:

What cameras to take on vacation?

Finding the perfect balance of convenience and quality in the camera gear I bring on vacation has become my holy grail – seemingly up until now, unattainable. Either I’m lugging around my big heavy camera and feeling resentful of it’s bulk, or being disgusted by the image quality and slow speed of the point and shoot camera (one of many I’ve purchased) I’ve nicely slipped in my purse. However, I think I’ve come closer to success since I’ ve reinvested in my equipment (all my camera gear was stolen in December). After waiting several months, my Panasonic GX1 Power Zoom finally arrived, and it is nice and tidy, fitting easily in my purse or jacket pocket, and allowing me to shoot in Raw mode with pretty quick focusing and fast shooting. I was even able to shoot bursts of images with this for my stop motion videos – now that is something.

The GX1 is a little overly complicated if you ask me – I’ve yet to give the time required to read the manual and figure out the zillions of options. That said, I was still able to take some pretty good shots, even in low light, with this little guy.

I also brought my new Nikon D4, which is a hulk for sure, but man, is it fast! And you can shoot at unthinkably high ISOs and still get relatively grain free images in low lighting situations. There is a dark side however – I was thoroughly dismayed and stymied to realized that neither my Lightroom 3 nor Adobe Photoshop CS 5 was able to open any of the images that I shot on the newly created (and supplied) XQD card by Sony. I spent hours researching this, and the only real help I got came from a B&H photo rep that I talked to who said that if I upgraded to LR4, and if I added the updated Camera Raw version of my Photoshop, I’d be in business. That did work – however it’s still a little slow going. So, while preparing for my next trip to NYC I was yet again faced with dilemma – bring my Nikon D700 whose files are easy to deal with, or the new D4, and wait for software technology to catch up, dealing with the slow processing speeds for now. I opted on the D4 so stay tuned. Maybe, just maybe, having the D4 and the small GX1 are the answer….lug the big one around while touring and the little one in my purse if I’m out to dinner. I’m writing this from a plane en route to NYC, so we’ll see…

Conclusion – the GX1 was really fun to carry around in my purse with no effort involved at lugging it around. However, it just didn’t compare to what I could to with my big ole Nikon. Duh, you could say. I guess it’s like anything – results require effort! I need a viewfinder to look through, and it’s hard to hold a tiny camera still. Mostly I worked on a stop motion video idea I have, but below are a few shots from Easter weekend. Now if I can just find the right shoes for my NYC trips…..

I am very excited to announce this very unique opportunity! I am hosting a workshop for photo enthusiasts September 20-25th in a 400 year old hacienda in central, mountainous Mexico that Kelley and Stephen Wilkinson (of Asheville) have spent 10 years renovating into a breathtakingly beautiful vacation retreat – Hacienda Las Trancas (www.hacienda las trancas). This is in a very safe area of Mexico and the weather should be divine as the elevation is 7000′. The large hacienda staff will take of cooking fresh authentic Mexican meals for us (many items grown in their organic garden), taking us on horseback rides, transporting us from the airport to the hacienda, and basically being there to assure that we have a wonderful vacation. All levels of photo enthusiasts welcome!

Here are the basics:

September 20-25th, 2012

Cost: $1400, which includes:
All meals
Luxury accommodations at the hacienda
Photography instruction, including a private session
Transportation to and from the Leon airport
Transportation to and from San Miguel for a day trip
Horseback riding trail ride guided by hacienda staff
Access to mountain bikes, jacuzzi, heated pool and commercial exercise facility.
Onsite spa features 6 massage therapists who offer wonderful treatments (additional fee, priced very reasonably).

Photography Instruction:

I will be offering demonstrations, slide shows covering basic elements of photography including composition, lighting, point of view, storytelling, and working with your subject, and offering one private session per person, to answer specific questions you may have about technical or artistic issues. While the basis of this vacation is photography, you will have plenty of unstructured time to explore on your own, get a massage, read in a hammock or go for a hike. It is above all a luxurious and rejuvenating vacation.

There will be a maximum of 15 people that can sign up, so I expect this to fill up quickly. A $400 deposit is required to hold your place. See below for more detailed info:

Here is a sampling of what we will do:

We will be greeted by the Las Trancas staff with welcome margaritas and a delicious mexican dinner served alfresco.

There will be several classes focusing on photographic topics such as composition, lighting, working with people, point of view, and telling your stories. Also I will discuss software including Lightroom, Iphoto and Photoshop as well as “Digital 101 – how to organize your images on your computer”.

I will have many demonstrations showing lighting tips and composing your images.

I will offer one on one photo instruction appointments.

You will explore the hacienda with the group and on your own with your camera – capture the wildlife, the flowers blooming, the mexican people, the intense colors and textures of the hacienda and its landscape, etc. – the photo opportunities will be endless.

We will visit photographer’s heaven – beautiful San Miguel, about an hour away, to take pictures as well as relax, explore and shop.

You can take a horseback ride on the hacienda’s well trained horses, stopping along to way to take pictures. Optional, of course.

Soak in the nearby natural hot springs that the staff can take us to nearby.

Have the horse back riding staff do a demo for us with the horses running in the late afternoon sun, dust kicked up in the dusk “magic” light. Beautiful photos!

Enjoy an afternoon of massage appointments set up for us to cap off a busy morning.

Celebrate our week with a slide show of guest work to show off all your new photo skills and get feedback from the group.

While the focus of these trips is for you to learn ways to improve your photographic skills, there will be plenty of unscheduled time to relax, rest and care for yourself (as well as edit your photos). We will have approximately 2-4 hours of scheduled photo time per day with the rest unscheduled and open to spontaneous experiences.

Depending on the number of people that sign up, rooms will be may be booked with two people in each. The bedrooms are huge and gorgeously appointed, so this should not be a problem. There is also a gym, volleyball court, hiking trails, a pool, a hot tub and lots of hammocks. If you are interested in the photography but have a companion who is not, they can still come and have a wonderful vacation at a discounted rate.

Fees include all meals, instruction, transportation to and from the Leon airport, horseback riding, a day trip to San Miguel and lodging. Other expenses you could expect are private massages (about $25/hour), transportation for individual day trips, and any alcoholic beverages that you would purchase during the week. There are wine and liquor available for purchase at the hacienda.

Deposit Due Upon Booking: $400, refundable until August 15th. It is strongly suggested that you buy trip insurance to cover you in case anything happens that makes you have to cancel, as well as cover you during the trip. I need a minimum of 10 people, so please don’t delay if you are interested so that we can be sure the trip will happen.

Total Fee: $1400 per person ($1000 after deposit). Depending on the number of people that sign up we may offer discounts for double rooms with upcharges for singles.

Last week I returned from 10 days in Seville and Madrid, Spain – we went to visit my oldest daughter, Jess, who has been living there since January. What a gorgeous city Seville is!!!! Every direction we explored provided more colorful winding mazes of stone alleyways peppered with bars, restaurants and cafes. There were stores mixed in there as well, though they were way outnumbered by the others (not to mention the stores were seemingly closed so much). Not one time did I see people walking hurriedly down the street talking on their cell phones – not once! The only people that we saw using their digital “attachments” in a cafe was in Madrid when we were in a nice restaurant, and the grumpy Americans next to us both had their smart phones in front of them avoiding table conversation.

I will admit that when the four of us came home at night we had our version of the American family in plain view: four laptops, four heads down, 40 fingers typing fast and furious catching up on the events on the day and keeping in touch with people from home. Yikes! We were supposed to get away, be in the moment, yet we were pulled back to home and work by all the technology we lugged around with us. I was as guilty as the others. When I observed this scene the second night, I vowed to go to my already chosen favorite cafe, Cafe Piola in Alameda, the following morning sans any technology – just myself. When I was leaving I grabbed a book, but when I ordered my daily cafe con leche, I realized the book was yet another escape from my surroundings, so I put it aside and just watched the people around me. This is why we leave our wonderful country – to experience the culture of another, right? And what a different culture it was – in general, people are not in such a hurry. We’ve heard this, but it’s interesting to see that even in a fairly large city, people linger over their coffee in the morning, talking to neighbors, family and friends, tossing their napkins many times on the floor when they are finished. I found that the sign of an authentic bar populated by locals was one littered with napkins. At first I scoffed as this slovenly site, but then realized it was just different – “we’ll clean up later after we’ve fully experienced this”.

When I was planning our trip, I decided to try to set up a home exchange through home link.org, and though it’s like finding a needle in a haystack to find a compatible exchange, we succeeded, and were able to stay in a lovely apartment in Alameda – a very lively area near El Centro. Our kind hosts invited us to dinner on the roof of their building and served us a wonderful, typically Sevillian meal of jamon iberico, manchego cheese, salad with eggs and tuna, and a tart – with, of course, lots of “vino tinto”. When we asked our hosts whether we should take a car or a bus to visit Ronda the following day, they offered the use of their car. When I demurred, feeling that was too big a responsibility, Carmen, the wife, asked me why I didn’t want to use their car? I replied “What if we had a wreck?”, to which she sensibly replied “Why would you do that?”. Emilio, the husband, followed up by saying “It is not my mother. It is not my lover. It is a car. Take it”. So the matter was settled, and we drove to Ronda the next day in their car – this was my favorite day yet. More about Ronda in the next post with photos from my new, big daddy Nikon D4…I tested it out on that day.

These were all taken with my little Panasonic GX1 that fits in my purse:

I was at Rancho La Puerta again in January when one of the guest yoga instructors approached me after the presentation I had given on “Self Expression Through Photography”, and said “I think the Ranch (as we call it) should hire you to create on of these videos to make the Ranch hipper”! What a great idea….

I talked to meet with my liaison at the Ranch before leaving for home, but we never were able to connect, so it was after I was back in Asheville preparing to meet the inevitable winter (after leaving the summer like weather we’d experienced at the Ranch) that I was able to send a link to the last two stop motion videos I had made – one for the Crash Test Dummies and one that featured 5 Walnut Wine Bar and the tunes of Ol Hoopty. End result: three weeks later I’m back on a plane headed to San Diego to spend a week at the Ranch photographing everything possible for a stop motion promotional video.

I never imagined I would be lucky enough to go there twice in one year, much less three times, so imagine my excitement at being able to go back with the objective of showing what it feels like to spend a week at the Ranch with my photos. Having been 7 previous times, I felt like I really knew what I needed to shoot to show that feeling – including wonder, peace, awe, appreciation, relaxation, contentment and satisfaction. I aimed to show the beauty of the Ranch – in the landscaping, the architecture, the incredible attention to detail in the decor, and in the natural landscape that we explore every morning at 6 am on the pre-breakfast hikes up the desert mountains. Starting your morning with a 2-7 mile hike, followed by a delicious healthy breakfast awaiting you, is almost a guarantee that you are going to have a wonderful day. Now follow that up with yoga classes with some of the best instructors I’ve ever had, classes for body sculpting, stretching, African dance and even hula hooping – there is an endless variety offered for every taste. Next, yet another delicious meal, some of which originates in the Ranch’s organic garden, and all is beautifully presented and deliciously healthy. The afternoon offers even more things to do (such as the photography classes that I teach), but typically by this point if I’m not teaching, I’m taking time to read in a hammock, check email, get a massage or move between the roof top hot tub and ice cold plunge pool (now that makes you feel alive!).

It’s easy to wax poetic about all the virtues of a week at the Ranch, but back to the photo assignment… After shooting practically non stop over the course of a week, I realized that I could have used a second week to really capture it all; alas, I had a “real” life in Asheville to return to. When I was hired I thought I would have about two months to create the video, but on my last day at the Ranch, my “boss” asked me “What would it take to get this video finished by the 23rd ( a mere 13 days later)?” Oh my. I had shot over 9000 still images, and even though I had been editing every day on my breaks and nights before going to bed, I still had over 7000 to edit when I left the Ranch. Beginning when I got on the plane in San Diego to head home, I edited the images down to about 1500 over the course of the next four days. Next, I had to find music that I could get the rights to use that would give the feeling and message I was after – no small thing.

Well, mission accomplished, though admittedly this make continue as a work in progress – already thinking of footage I’d like to substitute when I go back in July to teach again. Here it is on Vimeo as well as on the Ranch home page.

We are gearing up for the Working Girls Studio and Gallery opening December 2nd, 2011. Eli decided to take on the other gallery across the hall from our original one, so now we are really set up for space for teaching classes, painting and for photo shoots. The sunlight pours in the windows and it’s just all very exciting. This is the first time in 20 years that I’ve had a working studio outside of my house, so it’s a big change.

When we began, we worked with David Cohen to create a logo for us – David had the idea of creating a silhouette of Eli and me by photographing us first and then he created the first sketches. Girls being girls, we weren’t happy with our wardrobe, poses, etc., so I decided to shoot some more images and create the new silhouettes myself in Photoshop. Then we chose the colors we wanted in the logo, gave it to friend and designer extraordinaire Sheri Lalumondier, and asked her to work her magic with the colors, figures and fonts. To tie it all together we decided to liven up the dark stairwell leading to our studios by painting the steps the same colors as our logo to entice people upstairs. Since we are truly “working girls” and can’t always be around to have visitors, we will simply hang a sign at the bottom of the stairwell on the gate that says “open – come on up” or “closed but call us for an appointment”, rather than having strict hours of operation. We do plan, however, to have open hours on Thursdays and Fridays on a regular basis.

Watercolor painter, Kathryn Phillips, will be sharing the paint studio with Eli – we look forward to working with other local artists as well to offer them a place to exhibit and sell their work, create new work, and teach classes. Eli will be in charge of that part of the business, so you can contact her for more information on that.
I am excited to have a place to sell my work as well as have a downtown location to shoot in. To see samples of my print work, please go to my website. As always, I’m available for commissions.

One baby step at a time, Eli and I are putting together our studio. After tossing around many ideas for names, we decided on Working Girls Studio and Gallery. We ARE working girls (maybe not the type the name can imply), both with our photography (me) and painting (Eli), as well as with our downtown vacation rentals that we manage. Primarily, we both wanted a space that we could create in – a space that would be open and bright – so when Eli found this wonderful location on Battery Park, we knew it fit the bill. So, be on the lookout for this sign above the very colorful stairs we are painting – stay tuned for more updates.

I have worked out of a home office since my oldest daughter, Jessica, was a baby – and she’s now 20 years old. Working at home, and in some cases having a home studio, was wonderful for a long time – it allowed the female tendency toward multi-tasking to really max out. I could load a batch of images onto the computer, start a load of laundry, sort the images, fix a pot of coffee, and even begin the final edits – all while in my pjs. Just writing this makes me ask “Why would anyone want to change this situation?” . However, for years I’ve craved being downtown more, running into friends and clients, absorbing the energy of downtown Asheville, and yes, getting dressed and out the door in the morning. So, thanks to my friend Eli’s offer to share a space that she found on Battery Park, I’m finally here.

It’s a wonderful space with a wall full of windows that bring in beautiful light, particularly in the late afternoon, and we plan to not only use it as a working studio, but also as a place to offer workshops and classes. The idea is that when we’re able to be here regularly enough, we will have open hours when we invite the public in to see what we have to offer – our art work.

It’s a big undertaking but we’re excited about it. Stay tuned for more info. For now, here is a photo of the space.

While I had my six week stint in the 5 Walnut Gallery, I spent a fair amount of time people watching, socializing with the many people who stopped by to see what I was up to, and meeting new people. Since I had so much fun creating the stop motion video for the Crash Test Dummies last year, I decided to start a new project focusing on the “scene” around me at 5 Walnut – the many Asheville “flavors” that populated both the bar and the block. I really had no idea what I was going to do, as my vision kept shifting. Finally I told myself to just start shooting and see where it lead, which is exactly how the last one began. So, I drove back downtown one evening, armed with my camera, and as soon as I stepped out of the Rankin parking deck, I came upon a costumed troup of butoh dancers that were corralling the crowd, albeit quite slowly, to the NC Stage Theater for their performance. These performers moved so gracefully and deliberately through the crowd, dressed up in costumes and masks that were magnificent, that it was quite a lucky moment to catch – so “Asheville”. No sooner had I finished shooting the dancers than I rounded the corner only to run into a young woman holding a baby piglet. I stopped and asked “Could that little piggy walk down the sidewalk towards me?” and she replied “of course!”. So, what you’ll see in the opening of the video with the piglet and dancers happened just like that – I’m not kidding.

After that, I began posting messages on Facebook that said “Show up at 5 Walnut between 5-7pm tonight to be in my video”, and so many friends and clients did just that. All I told them was that the window in the bar was their stage, and to “do something”. While mild panic crept over the faces of a few, most people got to work with their ideas. And there were the many folks who simply wondered what the heck was going on and jumped in front of my camera for their cameo.

“I’m Not Kidding” is short hand in our household for “you won’t believe it, but it really happened this way”. The video would never have come together if I hadn’t found the PERFECT song for it by Asheville’s own Ol Hoopty – a song they wrote called Dance.

My favorite wine bar in downtown Asheville is the one at 5 Walnut, so imagine my pleasure at being able to set up shop in their art gallery for two months. I am there as much as I can be, but even when I’m not, the gallery is open whenever the wine bar is open, which is daily from 2pm until late night.

I am exhibiting works from three different series – “Asheville – A Contemporary View” and “Urban View” as well as a series of the Biltmore Estate. I am selling prints, framed and unframed, as well as posters, so please stop by anytime to take a look. Since I don’t have any new work hanging on the walls right now since I’ve been busy with other endeavors, I wanted to create a stop motion video to show at the gallery that would involve many of the local characters both in my life and the life of 5 Walnut. So, I’ve been shooting scenes of whoever shows up for the past week, leaving the “models” to their own improvisation, and boy have some of them come up with some original ideas! I have had so much fun photographing the locals but am having almost as much fun editing the hundreds of images, laughing out loud as I work by myself at my computer.

We are going to have a reception to show the gallery and the video on Thursday night, July 28th from 8:30 – 9:30, which is the night before Bele Chere begins so Walnut St. will be closed. I hope you can come.

I just got back from yet another blissful week at Rancho La Puerta – this is the best “working vacation” I take all year. While the format is the same each year that I go – I give a presentation on “Self Expression Through Photography”, teach “Digital 101″ and “Photographing People in Nature”, and lead a photo walk with demonstrations, I seem to feel obligated to shake things up each time. I constantly recreate the self expression talk, based on what I’ve been experiencing and thinking about over the past year, and this year I included samples from the HATCH mentors we had last April, Sylvia Plachy and Gerald Slota, as well as work and a video by JR, the photographer/graffiti artist who has “pasted” his huge images in various unlikely settings all over the world. If you have the time, I highly recommend that you watch this video about JR on the TED page, which shows a talk that JR gave about his acceptance of the TED prize – $100,000 to make the world a better place. Lofty goal, huh? I first read about JR in the NY Times last year, and I find his work to be immensely inspiring.

I had more students than in years past, and really enjoyed working with them all. I love it when people run up to me at dinner and show me the photos they took, using the tips I had given them in class – what a kick! I was talking to my liason at the Ranch, Victoria, about creating a “photo week” at the Ranch when I go next July that is more photo intensive, forming our own group for a sunset photo hike, private dinner, slide show of student work, photo contest, etc. The Ranch will help me promote it, and in turn I will try to get a group of people together that want not only a wonderful relaxing vacation, but that want to learn how to take better photos too. Best of all, we will be able to get special discounts as a group. So, if you are interested in staying informed on this, please sign up to follow my blog and I will post any info I have about it here.

This year my trip felt busier than usual, and I had to “schedule” down time to just relax and read my book (fantastic one by the way – “Cutting for Stone”) in one of many beautiful resting places – the gazebo, the hammock, the pool…you get the picture. I enjoy hiking most mornings up the mountain through the desert terraine, among wild horses, cows and wildflowers, followed by a delicious organic breakfast and various classes such as yoga and body sculpting. My friend and author, Kathleen Flinn, was the guest chef at the Cocina Que Canta, the cooking school at the Ranch, and I was able to take her cooking class, in which we made all kinds of wonderful things, including whole wheat artisan bread, homemade pasta, fruit tart with whole wheat crust, and other yummy dishes. We also made time to take some headshots of Kat for her upcoming book. Hopefully she will come to Asheville’s Malaprops Books to promote it next fall.

Here are a few scenes from our hikes and around the Ranch.

Now that the tsunami of HATCH Asheville has hit and receded, I am reflecting on the warp speed pace I’ve been living the past few months. Since my last post in April, I have spent a dreamy week in Paris, taught my first beginning photography weekend workshop in Cashiers, refinanced my house, thrown a party for 150 people, shot two books, and gotten married. No rest for the weary! I realize that I seem to thrive on having many balls in the air at once, but maybe I’ve pushed it a bit this time. I have two weeks to get ready for my annual week at Rancho La Puerta where I will be teaching some beginning photography classes, but I will also be allowed time to enjoy quiet, the smells of sage and thyme along the paths, dessert mountain hikes, delicious healthy food, swimming in the black bottom pool, and my favorite activity there – going between the ice cold plunge pool and the hot tub. That is truly an exhilarating experience.

The classes I teach on photographing people in nature, “digital 101″ and the demo sesssions come easily to me – I’m talking about what I know. It’s the nighttime presentation that stretches me each year – “Self Expression Through Photography”, and every year I feel compelled to re-create it, sometimes from scratch. Maybe, I’m thinking, it’s because with every passing year my life changes, evolves in one or many ways, so my ideas change and make me feel that what was true last year isn’t true this year. So here I am again, trying to decide how I think other photographers express themselves through their photography, but then I’m forced to ask myself the same question.

I can’t say I have the answers yet. I have, however, had the privilege to spend time with two amazing photographers that were gracious enough to share themselves with some “groundbreakers” (up and coming photographers) and a few other lucky people, including myself, and they have added to the self expression stories I plan to tell. Sylvia Plachy and Gerald Slota came all the way to Asheville from New York for HATCH, and I was able to spend time with them both – they couldn’t be much more different (I encourage you to look at their websites) – Sylvia is a photo journalist with an impeccable talent for catching not just “the” moment, but oh so many of them. Gerald, a fine art photographer, makes sketches of the scenarios he wants to act out, using his little wrapped in a baggie point and shoot camera simply as a vehicle to capture the intricate and sometimes wicked scenes in his head.

To tell the truth, while I was inspired by these immensely talented photographers, I was also discouraged, as I just don’t measure up. I wandered Paris the following week after HATCH looking for those shots that I was sure Sylvia would have seen that were eluding me. I was thinking of the advice Gerald had given me to leave my big fancy camera at home and just use a small camera, to really focus on the image and leave the technology behind. I couldn’t do it! Neither one – leaving the big camera, nor finding the clever moments. UGGGGH.

Where’s the happy ending to this photo story? That life keeps happening and I keep shooting. I’m no Sylvia Plachy nor Gerald Slota but I have my good moments, and some good ideas, and hopefully I won’t stop looking for those moments. Gerald said that I really lit up when I was talking to him about how much fun I had working with stop motion, and he was encouraging me to begin a new project with stop motion. So, that is the plan….

Now back to the self expression presentation preparation – where’s my muse?

Here is a photo of Sylvia, Gerald, the groundbreakers (Matt Brown, Ashley Florence, Alex Palmour and Liz Wells) with Brie Castell, my co-chair for Hatch Photography. It was a great experience – if you missed it, make plans to be at HATCH next year. And here is a shot of my wedding taken by my friend, Dot Griffith.

Not only will they give one on one time with our groundbreakers (TBA), they will also each give a gallery talk about their work, be honored at a reception at Castell Photography, and be on a panel about the role the narrative in photography. Other photo related events that we have organized include a showing of Sally Mann’s “What Remains” (Sally is one of my personal heroes), an exciting night time projected exhibit of “Up Close” in downtown Asheville’s Pack Square Park, and the opening of the Hatch Lab – a space that will be printing and showing prints provided by our community. Anyone can send in one image to be printed 11×14″ FREE on a Canon printer to be added to the ever growing exhibit which will be shown at 43 Rankin St. Don’t miss these interesting and mind expanding events! For more information go to the HATCH website and click on Photography. The other six disciplines of HATCH – architecture, fashion, music, journalism, design/technology and film – have innovative events planned as well so be sure and look at everyone’s offerings.

SEE YOU THERE!

Saturday night I received a gold Addy award for the book that I shot for Lark Books called Keeping Chickens – part of the Homemade Living series. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I thoroughly enjoyed working on this book with my “teammates” author Ashley English, art director and stylist Chris Bryant and editor Nicole McConville. The gold means I go on to the regional Addy’s, if I understand it correctly! I have made some good friends and business contacts through the Asheville Ad Club, so I’m certainly glad I joined. Below are some of the photos from the book that I submitted:

I had my first day of one on one photography training yesterday with the delightful Corrie Woods. Corrie and her husband, Jay Lichty, are in business together selling the beautiful hand made guitars that Jay crafts – their business is Lichty Guitars. Corrie photographs the making of each guitar in Jay’s studio, the final products as well as the various musicians that come to try out his soon to be famous guitars, so Corrie needed a few tips on getting the specific type of shots she needed. We talked about lighting, composition, depth of field and working with people. We also discussed naming and archiving files, choosing what type of file to shoot (jpg, raw, tif) and different types of imaging software. Corrie already has some experience so she grasped what we talked about instantly – I can’t wait to see what she does next. I loved the experience! I’m available for this kind of work, so if you or anyone you know is interested, feel free to contact me.

I have been working on a fun personal project this week – a book documenting my third wonderful year with my boyfriend, Steve. It started out with a simple idea – I would just make a card featuring photos from some our experiences from the past year, but then before I knew it I was designing a cover for a custom made box I recently discovered that you can order from WHCC. Once I had that “shipped” online, I started tinkering with the idea of creating a book. Nothing big, just a simple book. However, in the process of reviewing the hundreds, maybe thousands of photos I’ve taken, I realized that if I was going to put this much time just editing the photos, I needed a bigger story, and thus, a bigger book. So, two days later, after working at a frantic pace, I finished printing a sweet little collection of images from our past year together – with the goal of doing one every year in the future. Of course, the book was designed to fit inside the box I had ordered.

What made the entire project less overwhelming was the wonderful product made by Adobe called Lightroom. I had just upgraded to version 3, and what a worthy upgrade purchase that was. I was able to create collections that I could quickly drag selected photos to, and I could easily move them around to put them in the right order. The new print module made it very easy to lay out the pages, and I was able to print two pages on each sheet of paper which were centered so that it just required a few chops on the paper cutter to make the pages the same size and correctly lined up. Finally, I took my book to Will at Henco in downtown Asheville, and he quickly punched the holes to make a spiral binding. Voila! Done.

I’ve already created a new folder called “Year Four” so that I can just drag images there to eliminate the hours of editing next year. Maybe next time I’ll spring for one of the WHCC beautiful bound books.
